It wasn’t a particularly auspicious beginning, U2 guitarist The Edge says in U2 By U2, an autobiography of the rock band penned by all four of its members with input by manager Paul McGuinness.
Indeed it wasn’t. It stands to reason that the likelihood of a new teenage band succeeding is pretty slim when the lead guitarist (The Edge) is playing a homemade instrument, the bass player can hardly play at all (Adam Clayton) and no one really wants to sing. But succeed they did, having sold more than 130 million albums since responding to Mullen Jr.’s “drummer seeks to form a band” posting at a Dublin school in the mid-1970s.
The 352-page coffee table book spans 46 years, including the men’s childhoods, U2’s start, their reactions to their first taste of fame, to the band’s more recent involvement with Apple selling U2 iPods. Crammed with words along with colour and black-and-white photos, the book is a candid, intimate, funny and entertaining read. Readers will end the book with an appreciation for the friendships that have spanned three decades, a greater understanding of what U2’s songs are about, and better knowledge of the men themselves.
U2 By U2 is a gem — any fan would covet a copy.
